Freedom Walk for the Freedom of

Mr. Chanh Huu Nguyen

On Sunday - June 4th, 2006 in the heart of Little Saigon, the Vietnamese community plans to organize the largest Vietnamese gathering in the history of Westminster, California since the historic event of 1999, which gathered over 50,000 people on Bolsa and Bushard Street.  Little Saigon, home to the largest Vietnamese population in the world, outside of Vietnam, has seen many protests, mainly anti-communist demonstrations throughout the years, but none quite like this one.  Unlike most previous rallies organized by the Vietnamese community, this particular demonstration is dedicated to a local resident, who many consider “the only man who can bring democracy to Vietnam” as described by Liem Nguyen, a Vietnamese restaurant owner.  This man’s name is Chanh Huu Nguyen.

On April 5th, Chanh Huu Nguyen was arrested and placed in detainment during his trip to South Korea from the tropical island of Saipan.  His detainment was a response from the South Korean Government due to a request made by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to extradite him to Vietnam.  According to Dennis Catron, president of United States International Mission (USIM), Mr. Nguyen was traveling to Korea on behalf of USIM-Saipan on an opportunity to further develop a safe haven project for victims of human trafficking in Cambodia.  Many of Chanh Huu Nguyen’s accomplishments include the establishment of the Government of Free Vietnam consisting of over 5,000 active members across the globe, Radio Free Vietnam, and the Vietnamese Youth Foundation.  Chanh Huu Nguyen now awaits decision at the Seoul Detention Center in Seoul, Korea.

According to organizers, the demonstration will begin at 10:00am at the intersection of Magnolia and Bolsa Avenue in Westminster, California, and scheduled to last for 3-4 hours.  It is estimated that about 7,000 people are expected to participate in the historic event, which is another illustration of the incredible support for Chanh Huu Nguyen worldwide.

“My father has dedicated over 20 years of campaigning for human rights and democracy for Vietnam.  If South Korea extradites my father, then he will definitely be unjustly prosecuted and tortured,” explained eldest son Vinh Nguyen.

Since Chanh Huu Nguyen’s arrest on April 5th, 2006. There has been a tremendous international outcry from around the world demanding for his release.  As described in detailed on FreeChanhNguyen.com, many activities such as candle vigils, rallies, and hunger strikes have already been taken place all over the world.
